Spontaneous Occurrences

    While not a rare plant, this species is almost always found in our area in mesic sites, and usually on North Slopes. This plant showed up on its own on a very hot South Facing slope in 2016.

    This plant appeared ( the second such observation in Shell Ridge)in an almost level south trending meadow far from any water. According to some botanists, this is way out of its range.

  • Debate continues on the nativity of occasional occurences of Helianthus annuus. This photograph was taken on July1, 2015. It was still in full flower, without ever having any supplemental irrigation, on August 1, 2016. It is growing on a South facing slope.

    This is not a native plant, but its appearance this year surprised some botanists who felt that it was out of its range. It doesn't look like it will be wicked, but we can't take chances and it will be removed when spotted next year.
